Announcing Smack’s $61M Series B to Enable Intelligent Autonomy at the Tactical Edge

The nature of warfare hasn’t changed. Its character has.
As new technologies continue to transform the theater of war — from land, sea, and air to space, cyber, and the electromagnetic spectrum — countries and coalitions are challenged to adapt not only their munitions, but their fundamental approach to national security.
Today, the U.S. must be prepared to engage and win across all six of these domains simultaneously. Doing so successfully will require two key abilities; first, fusing, analyzing, and reasoning over multimodal data to make informed decisions across echelons and warfighting functions faster than our adversaries; and second, seamlessly enabling distributed forces, weapons, platforms, and autonomous systems to act coherently toward mission objectives at the speed of war, even in contested and degraded environments.
We call these two requirements Decision Dominance and Intelligent Autonomy. Earlier this year, Smack announced our Seed and Series A fundraise to deliver Decision Dominance to the Joint Force starting with Omega — our AI platform for command-level planning and operation that is currently moving into production across multiple branches of the U.S. military.
Today, Smack is proud to announce our $61M Series B fundraise to take the next step by building the hardware that will enable our Alpha decision platform to bring Intelligent Autonomy to the tactical edge.
This newest fundraise, which brings our total to over $90M, is a pivotal milestone in our development. Smack was co-founded by experienced MARSOC commanders with the express purpose of delivering the right domain-specific, AI-powered decision capabilities to the warfighters on the front lines who need them most.
We believe that Smack should be the closest thing the DoD has to an in-house software and hardware company. Our deep bench of military, science, and engineering experts gives us a unique and uncommon understanding of both the problem and the technology necessary to fix it.
The Series B round was led by Costanoa Ventures and First In, with additional participation from new and existing investors. In addition to scaling the hardware development for Alpha, the new funding will be used to rapidly increase model scope across domains and warfighting functions, and to recruit top AI research and engineering talent.
